Supporting people across Northern Ireland and the UK with trauma, anxiety, low mood, stress and relationship difficulties.

My name is Michelle Duffy, and I am an integrative counsellor and qualified social worker with over 10 years of specialist experience in supporting people with trauma, particularly with young people who have experienced sexual trauma. I have worked as a counsellor in schools and the community, supporting individuals aged 5 and over with a wide range of issues through various therapeutic approaches, including creative therapy and play therapy.
As a survivor of trauma, I understand the pain and challenges that can arise from life's darkest moments. However, I also recognise the power of healing, resilience, and finding light amid the darkness. That's why I am dedicated to providing trauma support for young people and adults as they navigate their own journeys through therapy, including EMDR therapy.
I offer a safe, empathetic space where individuals of all ages feel heard, respected, and supported.
My credentials:
MSc in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy,
BSc in Social Work
CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Integrative Counselling
Certificate in Sandplay Therapy.
EMDR Part 1 and Part 2
Certified Child and Adolescent Trauma Professional.
Cert: Advanced Trauma Treatment
Cert: Advanced Treatment of Dissociation in Children and Adolescents
MBACP Accredited.

Many people come to therapy expecting they will need to sit and talk about their difficulties. While talking can be helpful, it is not the only way to explore thoughts, feelings and experiences.
I offer a range of therapeutic approaches, including counselling, EMDR, creative therapy, sand tray work and play therapy. Together, we can find an approach that feels right for you or your child.
Whether you are experiencing trauma, anxiety, low mood, stress, relationship difficulties, grief, loss or life challenges, therapy can provide a space to explore, heal and grow.
I believe that every person is unique. Some people prefer talking therapy, while others find creative approaches, sand tray work, play or EMDR more helpful. I aim to work collaboratively with you to find an approach that feels safe, meaningful and effective for your needs.

Reaching out for support can feel like a big step. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, low mood, stress, relationship difficulties, trauma, loss, life changes, or simply feeling overwhelmed, I offer a warm, compassionate and non-judgemental space where you can feel heard, understood and accepted.
I understand that no two people are the same. We all experience challenges differently, which is why I believe therapy should be tailored to the individual rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. Together, we will work at a pace that feels comfortable for you, exploring your experiences in a way that feels safe and meaningful.
With a background in social work and specialist training in trauma, I bring an understanding of how life experiences, relationships, environments and past events can impact emotional wellbeing. I work with adults, children and young people, supporting a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem, grief, trauma, childhood experiences and relationship difficulties.
Alongside talking therapy, I offer EMDR, creative approaches, sand tray work and play therapy. These approaches can be particularly helpful when emotions, memories or experiences feel difficult to put into words, allowing exploration and healing in ways that feel natural and accessible.
I aim to provide a safe, supportive and collaborative therapeutic relationship where you feel empowered to better understand yourself, process difficult experiences, build on your strengths and move towards the life you want to live.

Sand tray therapy is a creative therapeutic approach that uses a tray of sand and a collection of miniature figures, objects and symbols to help explore thoughts, feelings and experiences.
During a session, you or your child can choose and arrange items in the sand to create scenes, stories or images that reflect emotions, relationships, challenges or life experiences. Sometimes this can help express things that feel difficult to put into words.
Sand tray therapy can be used with both adults and children and may be helpful for trauma, anxiety, low mood, loss, life transitions, self-esteem difficulties and emotional wellbeing. It can also support self-awareness, problem-solving and personal growth.
There is no right or wrong way to use the sand tray. Some people talk about what they create, while others prefer to explore their tray more quietly. The process is guided at a pace that feels comfortable and takes place within a safe, supportive and non-judgemental environment.

Sometimes it can be easier to explore thoughts and feelings through creativity rather than conversation alone. Creative activities can provide a gentle and engaging way to reflect on experiences, express emotions and gain a deeper understanding of yourself.
Depending on what feels right for you, we may use drawing, painting, collage, clay, journalling, cards, images, creative writing or other creative activities. For example, you might create an image to represent how you are feeling, use colours to explore emotions, create a collage about your strengths, or use cards and pictures to help start conversations and reflect on different areas of your life.
There is no expectation to be artistic, and there is no right or wrong way to take part. The focus is on the process rather than the finished product. Creative activities can help make therapy feel more natural, meaningful and engaging, while offering new ways to explore challenges, recognise strengths and support personal growth.
Creative approaches can be adapted for both adults and children and are always tailored to your individual needs, interests and goals.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a specialized psychotherapy treatment designed to help individuals heal from the symptoms and emotional distress stemming from disturbing life experiences. Following these experiences, individuals may find that images, thoughts, and emotions linger, becoming triggers that lead to feelings of overwhelm or a sense of being trapped in that moment. EMDR therapy utilizes bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, vibrations, or sound, to assist the brain in processing these memories. This therapeutic approach, alongside other forms of trauma support like child counselling, creative therapy, and play therapy, facilitates the natural healing process by helping individuals recognize and integrate past events.

I accept referrals from individuals over the age of 18, parents or carers of a young person if under 18. I Accept referrals from social services and other organisations who have agreed to fund.
Usually, after a referral is received, I will have an initial 15/20 minute conversation over the phone or in person free of charge. I will explain my approach and way of working. Individuals and parents will be given opportunities to ask questions, ensuring I am the right Therapist for either them or their child. If therapy i s for a young person and all parties are happy to go forward with therapy then I will have a 60-minute consultation with the parents or carers to gather all relevant information and history in terms of the current impact on the young person as this allows me to tailor therapy to the specific needs of the child. All policies and procedures including safeguarding and confidentiality will be explained at this stage and consent for the young person to engage in therapy obtained. We will then agree a date and time for sessions.
Sessions are highly person-centred and tailored to each individual's needs. I understand that it can be challenging for some people to talk about their thoughts, feelings, and experiences or to put these into words. Both adults and young people often respond well when they have the opportunity to express themselves creatively in a safe space. Therefore, I utilise various tools and techniques to make the process less intimidating, offering creative approaches alongside talk therapy to support each person's unique journey.
It is recommended that sessions take place once a week. Some individuals however have fortnightly sessions, this will be discussed at the beginning of therapy.
Adult sessions are 50 minutes. Young people's session lasts 45 minutes. Sessions with parents and carers can take up to one hour to allow for all the necessary information to be gathered and allow parents to discuss what is happening for the young person.
Counselling is strictly confidential, and maintaining this confidentiality is extremely important. For both adults and young people, I do not disclose anything shared during sessions to parents or third parties unless there is a safeguarding concern where the individual, young person, or someone else is at risk of harm. In such cases, I am ethically and legally bound to break confidentiality. However, I will always endeavour to discuss this with the individual involved—whether an adult or a young person and, if appropriate, with parents or guardians.
The sessions are £60. However, I understand that not everyone may be able to afford this and would not want finances to be a barrier to support. I, therefore, offer a reduced rate to a set number of clients. This can be discussed before any therapy begins.
There is no set rule for how many sessions an individual will need, as this varies from person to person. Generally, I would recommend a minimum of 6 to 12 sessions to build a trusting relationship and begin meaningful work. Any additional sessions will be reviewed regularly and discussed with the individual, and, if appropriate, with parents or other referrers.
As previously mentioned I am an integrative therapist which means I believe that no one approach suits everyone or all situations. Therefore I see each person as an individual with individual circumstances and needs. Therapy is tailored to meet those individual needs by exploring different approaches to help them process and manage their problems.
Many teenagers and young adults can choose traditional talk therapy only or a combination of talk therapy and creative approaches, whatever works best for them.
You can inquire about booking a session by contacting me via the number or email below. Initially, I will discuss with you, or if appropriate, with parents, carers, or the referrer, to determine if I am the right counsellor for the individual. Initial consultations are conducted to gather all necessary information and to ensure that any therapeutic intervention is tailored to the person’s needs, whether they are a child, young person, or adult.
